How to Maintain Your Hot Tub Properly
As with a swimming pool, hot tubs and spas have to be maintained regularly in order to stay clean and perform properly for the long haul. A hot tub is an investment like any other, so keep it in good condition is essential to its longevity. Hot tub maintenance, however, is a little more specific due to chemical conditions. Using improper maintenance techniques can do just as much if not more harm to your hot tub than if you never touched it at all. It’s important to get to know your hot tub’s standard performing conditions and to stay on top of its upkeep, because if the only time you ever go near it is to enjoy it, you won’t be enjoying it for long. To help, we at Blue Haven Raleigh Pools have some tips for the four main things you should definitely make part of your ongoing maintenance plan if you want to keep your hot tub looking and performing (and smelling) its best.
Clean the Filter
Taking care of your filter requires slightly different protocol depending on what type of hot tub you own. Your operating manual will tell you where you can find your tub’s filter, as some are located under the skimmer basket and many others can be found underneath the spa. Locations will vary. There will likely be a little water spillage when you open it, but this is normal and it won’t be much. If your filter has a pressure gauge, you’ll need to clean the cartridge once every month or two, depending on how often you’re using your hot tub. If you don’t have a gauge, you’ll need to be sure to clean it on a regular schedule. Most hot tub filters need to be changed every one to two years or around every 10-15 cleanings, which are necessary but break down the cartridge.
Clean the Tub
How often you’re using your hot tub will determine when it needs to be cleaned, but you can typically tell when it starts to turn if you’re paying attention. To clean the tub itself, you’ll need to drain the water completely. Then, you’ll likely want to vacuum it out to remove any dirt, sand, or debris particles. To remove bacteria, give the tub and surrounding exterior a thorough cleaning using a hot-tub-approved cleaner. Regular home cleaners are not a good idea, as they may damage the hot tub and throw off its pH.
Refresh the Cover
Your spa covering is an often overlooked aspect of your hot tub, but it does an essential duty to keep your hot tub clean. It, too, needs its own maintenance, however. It’s a good idea to take it off and let it breath a minimum of once per week so it can take a break from heat buildup and moisture. You’ll also need to clean it, removing dust, pollen, and debris that gather. Wipe it down well with an approved cleaner, then condition it appropriately to keep the material soft and and strong.
Keep It Full
You never want the water in your hot tub to get too low or too high. Ideally, your water level should remain in the middle of the skimmer intake. If the water level gets too low, the skimmer will start to suck in air, which can damage the pump. Keep an eye on your level, as a variety of factors can influence this without your notice.
